The M Megawheels S11 is a relatively simple to use but functional electric scooter at an incredible price tier. It contains a few useful features that aren’t readily available in other scooter models.

One of them is built-in headlights and rear lights, which are relatively bright compared to what other scooters have. Most competitors don’t even have built-in lighting, relying on third-party accessories instead.

Another plus for the S11 is speed control, which uses a system of three gears. You can switch between each gear depending on your desired cruising speed (first gear is at 6.25 mph, second is at 12.5 mph, and finally the third at 15.6 mph). Gears can be easily changed with the S11’s bright LED screen, conveniently located in the handlebar.

The S11 also features a robust braking system using two mechanisms – a mechanical drum brake and electronic brake. The two provide a redundant feature that increases the safety of this scooter.

The motor of the S11 churns out an above-average power of 350 watts, enough for a comfortable uphill ride and a top speed of 15.6 mph. It can also support weights up to an impressive 120 kg, giving you plenty of room to bring your stuff in before the scooter shows any sign of slowing down.

Where it hiccups a bit, though, is its range of 15.6 miles. It means you can only ride for about an hour (possibly less) if you’re going at top speeds. It just feels too short.

But despite this, the M Megawheels S11 is, in our opinion, still the best UK e-scooter when safety is paramount, thanks to its 3-gear speed control and built-in lighting.

The Deekdgee Electric Scooter is a relatively inexpensive electric scooter but has some of the great features of one.

Performance-wise, it’s somewhere in the middle. There are some plusses, like the three gear system that allows you to set your desired top speed, perfect for safely controlling how fast you can go. It also has a larger weight capacity, able to support up to 120 kg.

The range, however, is somewhat short, and the motor power of 250 watts is just above the bare minimum. That gives this electric scooter a climbing power of only 11 degrees.

Fortunately, ride quality is excellent with this electric scooter. Apart from using 8.5″ pneumatic wheels, it also has a shock absorption system that works in tandem to provide a buttery smooth ride. The relatively light weight (16 kg) and compact frame also make it aerodynamic and easy to carry, too.

Headlights and rear lights are also a plus with the Deekdgee scooter. Both are sufficiently bright, which makes your nighttime riding infinitely safer.

A bright LCD screen shows you crucial ride information, such as speed and remaining battery life. Controls like the throttle dial and brake handle are also thoughtfully placed.

Even with its performance flaws, the Deekdgee is still a fantastic electric scooter for adults and kids alike. Just don’t use it for commuting on hilly areas, and you’ll have a mostly positive experience.

Things to Consider When Buying the Best UK Electric Scooter

Choosing the best UK electric scooter might be a tall order, but it can be manageable as long as you know what you’re looking for. It also depends on how you plan to use your scooter (is it purely for recreational purposes, or will it be your primary mode of transportation?)

One useful tip is to focus on the overall quality of your ride, instead of just one metric like top speed or range. Quality of ride is the combination of factors that contribute to an overall pleasant riding experience.

If you want a decent or superb riding experience, here are the minimum specs we recommend: 300-watt motor, pneumatic tyres, disc or drum brakes, battery life enough for 20 miles, and speed that can comfortably reach 15 mph.

Speed is how fast your electric scooter can go – pretty explanatory. In reality, speed is dependent on several factors, like the power of your motor, how heavy the rider is, or the quality of your tyres. Electric scooter specs will usually list the speed based on ideal conditions (often, it’s a 70 kg person riding on a smooth surface).

Unless you’re joining an electric scooter race or something, top speed shouldn’t be your priority. Instead, aim for hitting the minimum safe speeds based on your purpose. For example, hitting at least 15 mph is required for daily commutes around the city (for comparison, bikes usually hit 14 mph, so it’s a reasonable speed to hit). In fact, some cities impose a 15 mph speed limit, so getting an electric scooter that goes beyond this speed is a waste.

With that being said, some high-performance scooters do exist that can go as fast as 50 mph. These are mostly for recreational users or racing enthusiasts.


Motors are the heart of an electric scooter. These are brushless DC (BLDC) motors located inside the hub of one of the wheels (or both in a dual-motor scooter), providing the torque and power to drive the scooter forward.

Unlike conventional motors, electric motors like the ones found in scooters are rated in watts. Watts is a measure of the power consumption of the motor; the higher the watt rating, the more powerful the motor. Low range motors will usually have 250 watts on average, going all the way to 6000+ watts for more powerful models.

Motor power determines how fast your scooter can reach top speed, how quickly you can climb steep inclines, and how much weight you can carry with the electric scooter. Your choice of motor power is dependent on your circumstances.

If you live in a particularly hilly area, a minimum motor power of 350 watts is recommended. Even then, you might experience a slow down while climbing up a hill, so go as high as your budget allows. For commuting, however, never go below 250 watts as your electric scooter will have a hard time keeping up with safe speed limits. Those are reserved mainly for kids or recreational users.

Some manufacturers might also indicate their motor’s sustained power and peak power. Peak indicates the big burst of power at the beginning of your ride, while sustained refers to how much power the motor can maintain over the duration of your ride. Between the two, you should be more concerned with sustained power if you’re a commuter. For racing or high-performance rides, however, peak power is preferred.


Brakes are the most vital safety feature of any vehicle, electric scooters included. So it’s essential that you consider them carefully.

The most important aspect of a brake is its stopping distance, which is how far the scooter will go before it stops once you hit the brakes. The shorter the stopping distance, the better the brake is. Aim for a stopping distance of 4.5 meters, with 3 meters being the absolute best.

Brakes in electric scooters can be categorized roughly into two: mechanical or electrical. Of the two, mechanical brakes are superior in terms of stopping power. Within the mechanical category, there are several options you can choose from.

Disc brakes use a rotor disc attached to the wheels of your electric scooter. It’s connected to a hand lever, which isn’t that different from the one seen in a bicycle. Once pressed, the rotor effectively stops the wheel from spinning and causing the scooter to stop.

Disc brakes are one of the best braking systems in an electric scooter, giving superior stopping power suitable for both wet and dry conditions. However, they do require maintenance and are overall more expensive than other systems.

Drum brakes are another type of braking system. They work similarly to disc brakes (including the hand level mechanism) and performs just as effectively. The difference with drum brakes is that they enclose the entire wheel, giving added protection as a side effect.

The con with drum brakes is that they’re heavier and more complex than disc brakes. Being enclosed, they’re also prone to overheating, which lowers its braking performance dramatically.

The other type of braking system is the foot brake. It’s simple, lightweight, and easy to use. Unfortunately, it has poor braking performance, especially on wet roads. Avoid this type of brake if you can, especially if you’re planning to commute with your scooter.

Electronic braking systems involve stopping or slowing down the motor itself to stop the scooter. They have the poorest braking power out of any braking system – with a braking distance of around 9-12 meters!

Bottom line – get mechanical brakes if you can, preferably disc or drum systems.

Range and Battery Life

Battery life is essential, especially if you’re using it for commuting. It determines how far your electric scooter can run. This distance is also called the range of your electric scooter.

Like speed, the range is dependent on several factors, such as the weight of the rider, the power of the motor, and the speed that you’re running. You should know that most manufacturers overstate the range of their scooters by around 30%. To be on the safe side, halve the range figure of your scooter to arrive at a more realistic number.

Like any electronic device, batteries have a capacity that diminishes with use. As a rule of thumb, cheaper scooters with cheaper batteries will deteriorate much quicker. On average, you should go for batteries that can last for 500 – 1,000 charging cycles before a noticeable drop in performance shows up.

An easy way to extend your range is to bring your charger with you. Better yet, get an electric scooter with two charging ports so you can reduce charge time by 50%.

Durability and Weatherproofing

Electric scooters need to have excellent build quality, especially if you plan to use it on your daily commute. Look for models that have superior components that don’t feel “plasticky” or flimsy.

A critical consideration of electric scooters is how weather resistant it is. Most manufacturers use the IP rating, or ingress protection rating. It’s a universal metric used to measure how resistant an enclosure is from dust and water.

IP ratings have two digits. The first describes its resistance to dust, while the second one tells you how resistant it is to water. The higher the numbers, the more resistant they are. An “X” digit indicates no protection at all.

So, for example, an IPX4 device means it’s resistant to water splashes, but not enough for it to be submerged. IPX7 can be completely submerged in water. In both cases, the “X” of the first digit indicates zero protection from dust.

Anything at or above IPX5 is ideal for protecting the electric scooter from even the heaviest rains

Weight Capacity

Weight capacity tells you how much load the scooter can support safely. Average capacity ranges from 99 kg to 120 kg

When choosing an appropriate weight rating, also look at any stuff you will be bringing like backpacks, packages, or safety gears like a helmet. For this reason, pick a weight capacity with a lot of buffer room.

Also, take note that the nearer you are to the capacity limit, the slower your scooter will probably run. If you’re particularly heavy or plan to carry heavy loads, consider getting a more powerful motor as well (a 500-watt motor for weights above 100 kg is a good rule of thumb).


Tyres are an often overlooked, but crucial, part of an electric scooter. They affect your scooter’s speed and range. But more importantly, the right pair of tyres can lessen bumps and give you a drastically better riding experience.

There are two types of tyres – Pneumatic (air-filled) or solid (airless) tyres. Of the two, pneumatic tyres are vastly superior. They have better shock absorption, which can dampen any bumps you encounter. Pneumatic tyres are also easier to handle in wet conditions.

The drawback with pneumatic tyres is that they require constant maintenance. You need to refill them with air regularly to maintain proper tyre pressures, just like with car tyres. They’re also much prone to punctures.

While solid tyres are inferior when it comes to ride quality, they do need zero maintenance. They also don’t puncture at all, which is why they’re suitable if your route has particularly rough terrain. Solid tyres are also much more common in cheap electric scooters.

Suspension systems help smoothen your ride by absorbing some of the shock from bumps along the road. They attach to either one of the wheels or both. Dual suspension systems are better for electric scooters meant for commuting.

Suspensions come in three flavours – rubber, hydraulic, or spring mechanisms. Your best bet will be a suspension system that combines spring and hydraulic.

Suspensions have a more significant effect if you have solid tyres, as they can absorb a lot of the shock from your ride. However, switching to pneumatic tyres has a more dramatic effect on ride quality, more than a suspension system can give.

Weight and Portability

The weight of your electric scooter isn’t much important, in the same way that you don’t care much about the weight of your car. For performance scooters where speed is essential, it’s much more worth it to focus on the motor and build quality of the scooter.

There are a few exceptions, however, where weight is a crucial factor. One of them is if you want a portable electric scooter.

Some electric scooters can be folded and meant to be carried around. They’re handy if you live in an apartment building with no outside parking, for instance. For portable electric scooters, go for weights less than 11 kg. Most scooters with a decent range will weigh somewhere in this neighbourhood.


Lights are crucial for any electric scooter meant for commuting around the city, even if you mostly travel during the day. After all, you never know when you’ll need to ride out at night.

The two most essential lights in an electric scooter are the front headlights and the rear red light. Front headlights are white and are designed to help you see what’s in front of you. The rear red light is used to notify other vehicles behind you, so they don’t bump into you.

Unfortunately, almost all electric scooters have poor headlights and rear lights. They’re often underpowered or are placed far too low, illuminating a small area in front of you.
